A study of the moderating effects of trade union membership on employees' perceptions of job security and fair treatment by management in the manufacturing industry in Kenya
Abstract
This was a study of the moderating effects of trade union membership on employees' perceptions
of job security and fair treatment by management in the manufacturing industry in Kenya. The
.objectives of the study were set out as follows: -
(a) To determine the difference between the perceptions of unionized and non-unionized
employees of job security.
(b) To establish the difference between the perceptions of unionized and non-unionized
employees of protection of employees by trade unions from unfair treatment and harassment
by management.
In order to meet these objectives, data was collected through the use of a questionnaire. The
questionnaire was designed and directed to a representative sample of unionized and nonunionized
employees from a sample of the manufacturing firms in Kenya.
The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and the key findings were that: -
(a) There is no significant difference between the perceptions of unionized employees and those
of the non-unionized employees regarding trade unions' role in guaranteeing job security.
(b) There is no significant difference between percept-io.ns of unionized employees and of non- unionized employees regarding union protection of employees from unfair treatment and
harassment by employers.
