dc.description.abstractThe phenomenon of African Independent Church movement has attracted the attention of scholars from different displines such as History, Sociology and anthropology, who have attempted to discover the factors that lead to the rise of these churches. Much emphasis is put on the social, economic and political factors 1n explaining the rise of the independent churches 1n Africa. This work aLtempts to incorporate the theological factor in the study of the Akurinu Churches movement which emerged in Gikuyuland in the 1920s. This study on the Akurinu Churches had three objectives:(a) to investigate the historical background and development of the Akurinu movement, (b) to study the Akurinu theology as manifested in their beliefs and practices. (c) to find out how their -. theology has influenced their social status.en
