An assessment of water quality in the Kisumu bay area of the Wiman Gulf, Lake Victoria, Kenya
Abstract
The project involved a biologiccl and physico-chemical
assessment of lake water quality in Kisurnu Bay in relation to
abstraction and treatment for the Kisumu water supply and the
impact of the rains on the water quality.
At present, most of the water for Kisumu's domestic and
industriaI requirements is drawn from the Iake 'ri'hich also
acts as a receiving waterbody for the wastewater from Kisumu.
The expected increase in population will result in en
increase in the demand for water with concomitant increase
in the amount of wastewater produced. At the present low
levels of water abstrcction from the lake, the raw water
quality does not show signs of serious deterioration but with
an increase in the dew.and for water, the quality of the lake
water may be seriously impaired.
