The objective of the study was to examine the oestrus
activity of Somali, Nandi, Merino, Romney Marsh and Karakul
breeds of sheep in the tropics for seasonality. Chapter I
introduces the work of other researchers in this field. -
Chapter II deals with how the experiment on oestrus activity
of the five breeds of sheep was conducted. The experiment was
carried out at Kabete, Kenya, in three phases from 2.. ' June
1966 to 26th December 1969. A flock of ewes comprising all
the five breeds were grazed together with two vasectomized
rams carrying raddle. harnesses. Ewes were observed daily for
raddle marks which were interpreted to indicate normal mating
or marks that might have arisen from mounting by a ram not associated
with mating. Each remained with the ewes for two weeks.
Disease control consisted of vaccination of sheep ."
against clostridial disease
