This paper is an attempt to survey relations between the Luo on one hand and the Abanyole and Abaloogoli on the other on the Luo-Luyia border of Kisumu-BUnyore-South Maragoli. The period covered is roughly from mid 19th century to a little after Independence. Two periods are discernible. There is an early period when Geographical and environmental factors were the chief determinants in the shaping and development of relations. Then there is a latter period when the environmental factor- sank in importance, giving way to man made (or European-made)factors The first period is dealt with in one section. The second period is divided into two sections mainly for the purpose o£ rendering it into sections of reasonable lengths. A summary of the contents of each of the three parts has already been made in the last paragraph of the introduction and I feel no need to repeat myself here.,en
