The problems of translating from English into Swahili: as exemplified by V.O.K. News items
Abstract
This paper is an attempt to determine the
existent translotion problems in translating from
English into Swahili. These problems are potrayed
in the translated texts, and they reveal themselves
in certain features which characterize them and by
which they can be identified and described.
Therefore, the dissertation is meant to contribute
to the area of the analysis of translated texts by
specifying some aspects of the problems of
translation, especially in the areas of syntax,
lexicon and non-linguistic factors:
The dissertation is divided into five chapters.
Chapter I presents the introduction which discusses
the background of the V.O.K. swahi li, news items,
the aim, the research problem, the rationale, the
scope of the study and its limitations, the literature
review, the concept of translation with other aspects
and the theoretical framework adopted for the study.
It is then concluded with the outline of the
methodology employed. This chapter, is theoretical
and it is intended to give a background to the
understanding of the analysis Chapters, which
compse the major part of the study.
Chapter two is focusing on syntactic problems
of translation. This chapter begins the actual
analysis and discussion of the data. Chapter
three is based on lexical equivalence problems
while, chapter four features on non-linguistic
problems of translating. These three chapters
lead onto discussions which reveal some of the
problems behind the scene of translated texts.
Chapter five being the lost, deals with the
summary, findings and suggestions for further
research in this area. These will be the concluding
remarks of the whole work done in this dissertation.
