The role of small scale irrigation schemes in rural Development: a case study of Kibirigwi irrigation scheme
Abstract
Exploitation of small scale irrigation
schemes as a programme for agricultural development
has for long been neglected. The study of Kibirigwi
Irrigation Scheme attempts to demonstrate the
potential role of these schemes in developing the
rural areas.
The study examines the factors that have
limited agriculture, as the main economic occupation,
from bringing about socio-economic development of
the area and thus establishing the need for irrigation
development. It also examines the institutions and
service programmes necessary to accompany the
provision of irrigation water.
