dc.description.abstract | aim of the study has been to ascertain the role of density control in the preservation of the neighbourhood. specifically in Nairobi West Estate in Nairobi. The first chapter highlights the problems of misapplication of density control on essential neighbourhood requirements. Chapter two examines different literature on density control and residential neighbourhood characteristics. It examines the zoning consideration for urban land use and the elements of neighbourhood character that it is meant to uphold. The third'chapter reveals the findings of the research and data on the study area hy LIse ol graphic presentation. Nairobi West is occupied 80% by periodic tenants. a fact that hears significantly in the attempts to protect neighbourhood character of the clusters. This is due to the fact that residents' associations have no opportunity to form and mature we II enough to significantly playa role in deterring density control and neighbourhood form threats. Chapter four concludes that the density control regulations in Kenyan legislation can be applied in a manner that would not unnecessarily thwart natural growth of the area. It is interesting to note that the root of the problem could be pinpointed as ignorance on the part of the Council's officers. Temporary and long-term recommendations are herein made to arrest the externalities and form a guide to other urban centres faced with the same circumstance. | en |
