An analysis of performance appraisal system: a case study of Electoral Commission of Kenya, Nairobi
Abstract
The study was about performance appraisal at the Electoral
Commission 0 f Kenya. It was carried out at the headquarters in
Nairobi. The target group was 60 employees but the study
managed to get response from 38 employees and this number was
considered representative of the population of study. The
collection of data was done using a questionnaire and the data
analysis done using SPSS in form of frequencies and mean
scores. Data findings were presented in form of tables.
From the findings it was evident that ECK is composed of young
people. ECK has been generally indifferent in setting standards
and goals for the employees and in monitoring performance
results. ECK, to a low extent, has been planning and appraising
performance and planning performance appraisal sessions.
There has been to a low extent staff mefJ1bers input in the
appraising of performance. The simple implications of these
findings are that ECK does not take much consideration of
performance management. Managers and employees should
create objective measures for any kind of work, and tie them into
performance appraisal or performance management system that
enhances achievement of its set goals. Whether all of the
employees of ECK understand the ECK goals and how they can
support them.
The study concluded that ECK has not satisfactorily engaged
itself in performance management in general and performance
appraisal in particular.
