The problems that are associated with urban life are basically those of lack of housing, unemployment and inadequacy in the supply and distribution of the essential facilities and service to match the town population. Such problems have been agqravated due to the influx of population fr the rural to the urban areas, resulting in over usage or misusage of the facilitie provided for by the population that had been living or that had been planned for in the urban area. This study has examined the successes that have been achieved in ujamaa villages in rural Tanzania through the country' policy of socialism and self reliance, that is the ujamaa concept. The study ha established that the application of t.he ujamaa concept in the planning of urban neighbourhood has wide scope only that the heterogenous nature of the urban population makes it difficult. to apply the concept. smoothly as has been done in the rural areas here the people usually originate from single cultural and ethnic backgrounds.en
