dc.description.abstractThis study is an analysis of the challenges of attaining equivalence among television news editors, reporters and translators. It uses Eugene Nida's formal and dynamic equivalence theoretical framework. This research project is organized into five chapters. Chapter one focuses on introductory elements of the study which include the background, statement of the problem, hypotheses, literature review, theoretical framework, and methodology and rationale, among others. The second chapter focuses on basic concepts and perspectives in translation and the relevance of equivalence. The various academic standpoints on the topic of equivalence are explored. Chapter three is on data presentation. In this section, the collected data is presented, both qualitatively and quantitatively, to demonstrate the salient aspects of lack of equivalence in television news translations as observed in the study. Chapter four is on data analysis, where the material in chapter three is analyzed in detail. Chapter five is made up of the summary, conclusion, discussion and recommendations for further research, as well as problems encountered in the study. The main finding of the thesis is that attainment of equivalence in the translation of television news from English into Kiswahili is a major challenge among reporters, translators and editors in Kenya. The main method of data collection is observation. of live television news. A questionnaire is used also for feedback purposes.en_US
