The role of the negative binomial parameter k and index of patchiness as measures of dispersion in relation to random removal of individuals are discussed. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate analytically that the negative binomial parameter k is a measure of dispersion. The negative binomial parameter k and index of patchiness are inversey related Equicorrelation matrix is analysed in relation to coefficient of determination, partial correlation and principal components with respect to the negative binomial parameter k. The analysis demonstrates that small values of k are associated with overdispersion whereas large values are associated with randomness.en
