Issues in the transfer of useful knowledge in agricultural development in Kenya
Abstract
This paper outlines the major issues in the production, adaptation and transfer of technical knowledge in the field of agriculture in Kenya. An attempt is initially made to place rural and agricultural development within the context of overall national development. The paper then discusses the role of technology in agricultural development, outlining, with the aid of case-studies, the magnitude of gains which accrue to specific technical packages in Kenya. The paper briefly reviews the institutional framework for knowledge generation and transfer in Kenya and outlines specific problem areas for discussion. Suggested improvements are presented in diagrammatic form, representing a systems approach to knowledge flow and hence incorporating other sectors involved in rural development
