This study aimed at establishing levels and trends of the infant mortality, and assessing the quality of the infant data from the Rusinga Demographic Surveillance Survey (DSS). The study utilised data from Rusinga PSRI DSS, which was set-up in 2001, and collects longitudinal data on the demographic events of the Rusinga Islands population. TIle study focused 011 the infant mortality since it is one of the key components of population change and measures of the wellbeing of a population. This was an exploratory study to provide information on the levels and trends of the infant mortality in Rusinga Islands lor a 10 years period since the year 2001. In addition, the study provides more insights on the Rusinga DSS data quality. This study's findings were limited to the quality of data; especially missing information on infant deaths for the year 2001,2002 and 2008. Data used in this study was extracted from a database of demographic events on Rusinga Island and was collected by research assistants recruited from the Rusinga Island community. Data capture and analysis were done by Fox Pro and SPSS computer program respectively. Descriptive statistics, cross tabulation and demographic tools were the main method of data analysis while the study findings were presented using tables generated in SPSS. The study findings show that the infant mortality data on Rusinga Island is of poor quality. Trends of the IMR cannot be generated using the data as most information is missing. The main recommendation is on improving the quality of the Rusinga DSS data.en_US
