A role and reference grammar (RRG) analysis of the morphosyntax of the Gikuyu simple sentence
Abstract
This study sets out to investigate the morpho syntax of the Gikilyii simple sentence within the RRG framework specifically to see if the sentences can be accounted for by RRG's layered structure of the clause. The interaction and linking of syntax, semantics and pragmatics in Gikilyii simple sentences was investigated Chapter one provides a basic background to the study. The issues discussed in this chapter include: the background to the language of analysis, statement of the problem, objectives, hypothesis, rationale, scope and limitation, theoretical framework, Literature review, research methodology and significance of the study.
Chapter two gives the RRG's account of the syntactic structure of the Gikilyil simple sentences and simple noun phrases. Aspects of Gikilyil sentence types have been analysed as well as issues relating to negation, tense, aspect, mood and modality. Modifying elements of the noun phrase were also discussed. Chapter three analyses the semantic structure of Gikilyii and the logical structures for some Gikilyii verbs. RRG's· notion of semantic macroroles, thematic relations and grammatical relations were discussed.
Chapter four presented the focus structure of Glktiyii simple sentences including declarative and interrogative sentences. The ideas of potential and actual focus domains were discussed. Chapter five dealt with the details ofRRG's linking system involving syntax and semantics. Chapter six has the summary, conclusions and recommendations made from all the preceding chapters.
