Study of meiosis in a clone of S. spontaneum (2n = 54), revealed that 11.39 ± 2.52% of PMCs undergo cytomixis during premetaphase I. Only 18 bivalents migrated with the nucleolus into the recipient cell and 9 remained in the donor cell, which was taken to indicate the existence of a basic number of 9, in addition to previously reported basic numbers of 6, 8 and 10.en
