The impact of East African Community on the growth of university education in Kenya
Abstract
Regional integration on the higher education sector is a multidimensional process of fundamental relevance for the economic and social development of the countries in the region. This process is taking place in a radically changing global context. This paper is an attempt to approach the issue of regional integration and the growth of higher education in the East African Community, which can be subsumed under the broad research agenda on the internationalization of higher education.
It highlights the complex web of cooperation between countries within the Eastern African region characterized by demands of harmonization policies such as monetary, trade, investment and infrastructural. The paper also delves into educational integration efforts in SACU as one of the oldest and most effective operating customs unions in the world. Issues of the challenges and opportunities for Kenyan universities are also discussed with possible recommendations and suggestion for further research.
