The purpose of the present study was to see to what extent Corpus Referencing, an emerging Computer Aided Translation Tool (CA IT) technique, could be used to achieve intratextual consistency in the translation of concordant or recurrent syntactic and lexical items in an SL text. Corpus referencing is a recent addition to CA IT. It analyses texts related to the Charter for Public Service in Africa (CPSA) using Multitrans, one of the leading types of professional translation software which, among other things, analyses the frequency of concordant terms in a given SL text. The results of the study show that intra-textual inconsistencies can be identified and corrected more efficiently using a corpus referencing tool than when this is done manually by a reviewer or translator not using such tools. Chapter one is a general introduction to the study that puts translation quality assessment into context and the role of CA IT techniques like corpus referencing. It outlines the statement of the problem, objectives, hypotheses, rationale, scope of the study and the corpus referencing conceptual framework. Chapter two gives further insights into the translation quality assessment and concordance as a key element in this analysis. Chapter three presents the data found in the sample documents, comparing the SL text concordant items with their TL equivalents. Chapter four analyses the findings of the study. Chapter five concludes the study findings and makes recommendations for future research related to corpus referencing.en_US
