The study set out to investigate strategic planning practices by Rural Agency for Community Development and Assistance (RACIDA) a Non-government Organization in Mandera County. Employing case study which allowed the researcher to gather in-depth information about the organization's strategic planning practices and the roles and responsibilities played by the board, management, donors, consultants and communities in organization strategic planning. The study revealed RACIDA has low capacity building activities as compared to project activities. The major causes of the low strategic planning were the organizations' inadequate financial and high dependence to donors in order to respond effectively and autonomously to the needs and priorities of their beneficiaries; and inadequate capacity for the boards, management, donors, consultants and communities to effectively go through the strategic planning process. In order to improve the strategic planning processes, the study recommends mentioning a few the following: Donors need to adopt 'a more partnership' approach. They need to be more honest and transparent; Awareness creation for stakeholders of the strategic planning. This could be done as a special session with the organization at the beginning of the process; ensuring that there is an agreed and shared purpose for going through the strategic planning process among all the key players and comprehensive investment in organizational capacity building. It needs to invest in capacity building beyond acquisition of resources and training in specific skills.en_US
