| dc.description.abstract | The focus of this study is to investigate communicative effectiveness of media texts. This is because media texts form a domain in communication which is accessible to many readers. Mutahi Ngunyi's texts in the Sunday Nation newspaper formed our source of data. These are texts written based on local, national and political contexts in Kenya. To analyse the data, we make use of Critical Discourse Analysis theory to investigate how effectively communicate Ngunyi's texts are.
The texts collected were analysed using the theory and the results revealed that Ngunyi's texts are cohesive and coherent communicative units which are both informative and acceptable to the readers. This is because N gunyi uses various linguistic strategies by taking the local, national and political context into consideration. This thesis is organized in such way that chapter one gives a summary of the general framework of the study, statement of the problem, the set of objectives, hypotheses, theoretical and methodological frameworks and literature review related to the study, theory and topic.
The context related to the data of the research was critically examined and described in chapter two. In chapter three, cohesion and coherence as communicative principles in Ngunyi's texts are identified and described. In chapter four an investigation in informativity and acceptability of Ngunyi's texts are described. Here we consider how Ngunyi makes his opinions informative and acceptable to his audience (readers). Finally, a summary of findings, conclusions and recommendations are presented in chapter five. | en_US |
