| dc.description.abstract | This paper presents the results of a linguistic study in graffiti on Matatus in Kenya. The study adopted the theoretical framework of Lexical Pragmatics. The main purpose of the study was to investigate and analyse the linguistic elements in graffiti perspective on Matatus. The objectives of the study were to analyse intentionality, communicative effectiveness and the- role of context in understanding graffiti on matatus and to establish whether Lexical Pragmatics theory can be used in the analysis of graffiti on matatus. The study revealed that Lexical Pragmatics theory adequately accounts for the successful interpretation of graffiti on matatus.
The results revealed further that effective communication in graffiti rely on context for effective interpretation. This study is organized into five chapters. The first chapter focuses on the introduction of the study. It highlights the introductory elements of the study; its background, statement of the problem, objectives, hypotheses, rationale, scope and limitation, theoretical framework, , literature review, methodology and significance of study.
Chapter two discusses the linguistic description of graffiti and lays a foundational starting point of graffiti while chapter three discusses the concepts and tenets in understanding graffiti intentionality, communicative value and the role of context. Chapter four tests the theory. It subjects the collected data into the Lexical Pragmatics adjustment processes and finds out if it can adequately analyze data. Chapter five concludes the study by providing the general overview of the study and recommends for further study. The findings of the study revealed that graffiti can be analyzed in any multilingual set up, that is, English, Kiswahili, and Sheng. | en_US |
