dc.description.abstractImprisonment, serve a variety of functions, these include incapacitating an offender from committing further crime, denying the offender the right to liberty as a punishment,( Horalambos and Holborne 2007: 560) and rehabilitation of the convicted offenders so that they become law abiding citizens on release among others. However as concerns the rehabilitation function this mandate is difficult to achieve in an environment where inmates use and abuse drugs and substances. This study established that the problem of drugs and substances exist in prisons with cannabis sativa being the most common drug followed by psychotropic substances. The study found out that the largest means by which drugs and substances enter injo .prisons is through the prison staff, and to control the problem, prison authorities rely majorly on punishment of inmates caught with drugs and substances. The study used quantitative data collection method supplemented by qualitative method. Proportionate simple random sampling method was used in the selection of research participants who were both the inmates and staff at Kamiti. Primary data was collected directly from the respondents through interviews and questionnaires while secondary datawas collected from the prison's records such as the Chief Officer's Journal and the searches records Book. Finally data was analyzed and presented in tables, percentage and diagrams.en_US
