Data compiled from three large scale rangeland aerial censuses carried out during the year provided a total estimated elephant population of 60,000 for the area as a whole. The highest numbers are in Tsavo East and adjacent Galana Ranch, and in the coast forests of the East Central Coastal census region. Substantial numbers were scattered throughout the North East and North Central regions.
