| dc.description.abstract | This study sought to assess the factors affecting academic performance in K.C.S.E in public secondary schools in Mathira Constituency. The objectives of the study were to identify the influence of gender on academic performance in public secondary schools in Mathira Constituency, to identify the influence of incentives on academic performance in public secondary schools in Mathira Constituency, to establish how availability of resources influence academic performance in public secondary schools in Mathira constituency and to establish the influence of school management on academic performance in public secondary schools in Mathira constituency.
Descriptive survey design was used and a target population of all public secondary schools in Mathira Constituency. The total number of schools was 32. The researcher studied 12 schools and used the stratified sampling procedure. All the secondary schools were grouped into strata according to their category. The study involved combining of qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection.
The findings show that boys generally performed better than girls, incentives improved performance, more resources meant better performance and better school management dictated better Performance. The recommendations made from the research were that all the education stakeholders should address the discrepancy in KCSE academic performance in secondary schools in Mathira constituency. This should seek to ensure that factors contributing to poor performance among the girls are adequately addressed. Also, although one may argue that providing incentives is tantamount to bribing the students, the schools should ensure that incentives are offered to the students to motivate them.
Token should be more embraced for it had the best results. Still, the government should ensure that public secondary schools in Mathira Constituency are adequately equipped with resources so as to improve academic performance in the area. Greater emphasis should be on the human resources. Lastly, all public secondary schools in Mathira Constituency should encourage more BOG and PTA meetings in a year so as to create synergy in the schools and consequently improve academic performance in the schools.
The study is of immediate benefit to the Ministry Of Education, Science and Technology in the formulation of future education policies. The research findings was also expected to be significant to parents, educationists and the society in general in understanding performance of KCSE in Mathira Constituency. This study would also contribute to the existing body of knowledge on KCSE performance as well as form a basis for further studies in future. | en_US |
