Factors influencing implementation of community based water projets (CBWP) in Kenya: a case of Iraru and Gukui-Mweru in Imenti South District (Kenya)

Abstract

The study aimed at investigating into the factors that influence the implementation of community based water projects in Kenya with specific reference to Iraru and Gikuimweru water projects of Imenti South district. The design considered the fact that Iraru was started 26 years after Gikui-mweru yet the two projects were at the same level of implementation; hence the question why some projects succeed where others fail. It adopted a descriptive survey design. It also involved 3,395 and 24 members and management of the two projects respectively.

The population sample for members was 176 and 163 for Iraru and Gikui -mweru respectively as well as 5 and 3 members of management respectively. This was a sample of 10% and 30% for members and the management accordingly. The instruments of data collection were the questionnaire, interviews and observation and the key observation was that members' participation greatly influenced the implementation as illustrated by 42% and 15% for Iraru and Gikuimweru respectively on member's involvement in activities and consistency of annual general meetings. It recommends greater involvement of members in aU steps of project implementation.
