The Department of Urban and Regional Planning was established in 1971 to offer one year diploma certificates in Urban and Regional Planning. The Diploma course was phased out and a two year Masters of Arts (Planning) degree course launched in 1973. Since then, the department has trained postgraduate students not only from Kenya but also from Eastern and Southern African countries. While most of the trained graduates have joined their countries' respective ministries as physical planners, many of the graduates have found their way into universities, international organizations, NGO, whose development activities focus on urban and regional planning, the management of the natural and the built environment and community development.
