This paper addresses agroforestry in arid lands from the perspective of people's participation. It stresses the crucial importance of trees in a dominant economic sector, animal husbandry, and takes into account the importance of local knowledge and natural resource management in semi-arid West Pokot District. Existing land use and management strategies, wood species use and management, aspects of range and forest management relevant to land and water management, and interference in traditional land use systems are discussed.en
