Chairperson: Department of Private Law
Abstract
The Department of Private Law has a concentration of highly qualified academic staff. The staff establishment in the Department is thirteen academic staff. The actual number of staff on the ground is currently ten academic staff members, two secretaries and a messenger/cleaner. The Department is not a teaching department. Its members of staff teach law courses across the board.
Of the academic staff, three are Associate Professors, namely, Prof. Patricia Kameri-Mbote who is the Head of the Department and Chair of the Research and Publications Committee, Prof. Albert Mumma, who is the Head of Academic Programmes and Co-ordinator of the Master of Laws (LL.M) Programme in the School and Prof. F. D. P. Situma. Prof. Situma returned to the School recently after a leave of absence at the National Environmental Management Service (NEMA) where he served as a Director of Legal Services. Prof. Kameri-Mbote was appointed to head the Department in November 2002. She served as a member of the Committee of Eminent Persons. She is an internationally renowned legal researcher and scholar and has also been involved in a number of National Policy Formulations processes such as Land policy, Biotechnology and Wildlife. Prof. Albert Mumma is a member of The National Environmental Tribunal while Dr. P. L. O. Lumumba served as the Secretary to Constitution of Kenya Review Commission. Mr. Edwin Bikundo is currently on study leave pursuing his doctoral studies at the University of Sydney, Australia.
The Department, as a host of The Research and Publications Committee of the School, is charged with the duty of among other things publishing the East African Law Journal and facilitating the students’ publication of the University of Nairobi Law Journal.
The Department currently has two senior secretaries, Ann Kaara and Catherine Kamau.
