Strategic management is a set of decisions and actions that result in the formulation and implementation of plans designed to achieve a company's objectives. Evaluation and control is the process by which corporate activities and performance results are monitored and actual performance compared with desired performance, the resulting information is used to take corrective action and resolve problems. The objective of the study was to establish the strategic evaluation approaches adopted by NGOs in Nairobi and to determine the challenges facing NGOs in evaluation. The research was conducted on a sample of 70 NGOs in Nairobi province and listed by the NGOs Coordination Board. NGOs Coordination Board (September, 2010) had listed 708 NGOs in Nairobi District from different sectors of NGOs such as health, relief, agriculture, education, industry and the supply of amenities and services. Primary data sources were utilized to collect the relevant data for this study through a questionnaire. Out of the 70 targeted respondents only 43 questionnaires were returned of which 5 were cancelled owing to inadequate response (many questions were not answered). Therefore, 38 questionnaires were considered for analysis. This constituted a response rate of 54.3% which is an adequate response rate for statistical reporting. The Program Officers of the respective NGOs were the main respondents of the study. This study took a descriptive cross-sectional survey research design on a stratified sampled population and data collected using questionnaires. The study concluded that the NGOs in Nairobi use management by objective and continuous improvement or just in time strategy approaches in strategy evaluation. However NGOs in Nairobi need to take a different strategic orientation on the approaches they use in evaluating their strategies. It recommended that the NGOs consider other strategy evaluation approaches for example benchmarking, balance scorecard and business process reengineering; involve all the employees in strategy evaluation and eliminate unsupportive culture and resistance to change. The NGOs are recommended to put into consideration organization-wide communication and coordination, acceptability, suitability and link between the subordinates' objectives with organization's objectives in their strategy evaluation. The findings also identified failure to incorporate employees in strategy evaluation, lack of financial resources among other factors to be the major challenges affecting NGOs in strategy evaluation and control. The NGOs in Nairobi need to start committing resources to strategy evaluation structures; adapt more efficient methods of using scarce resources; involve all employees in strategy evaluation; invest in the right strategy evaluation approaches/techniques; and incorporate strategy evaluation and control in strategic planningen_US
