dc.description.abstractThe research aimed at establishing the succession planning process at Josra Coffee and also determines the factors that influence the process in the firm. The study observed that succession planning is a crucial process to the success of a business and more so family business in order to guarantee continuity of the family jewel under the control of a member. This point was reinforced by the findings that if a senior partner retire without addressing ownership control, governance structure and decision making process, their interest after their departure will be at risk. However, the study found out that at Josra coffee, the firm has been able to institute proper mechanism of ensuring continuity of the firm under the management of the family members. The research found out that the firm in instituting its succession process has faced a number of challenges including building of consensus from all members of the family on who among them was to go to the helm of the management. Another challenge witnessed was determination of a fair remuneration to the successors as they cannot be housed equally and packages are different according to experience and ideas. In trying to achieve the research objective, the researcher adopted a case study approach where four members of staff and an outsider close to the firm and owners of Josra, were interviewed on the basis of an interview guide prepared. The interviewees were persons thought to be knowledgeable about the organizations. The study found out that Josra coffee has adequately put in place mechanism to facilitate smooth transition of the management of the day-to-day activities to the second generation, evident through the number of successors that have taken over the management of the firmen_US
