Abstract

Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to ascertain the extent of damage caused to cowpea pods by the common pod sucking buqs Riptortus dentipes F. and Anoolocnemis curvioes F. and to elucidate the factors contributing to their susceptibility or resistance in the field. Greenhouse studies were aimed at determining the parameters in cowpea pods for assessing the amount of damage caused by the bugs and hence to ascertain whether these bugs could be considered alike in resistance evaluations of cowpea in the field. The primary objective of field investigations was to determine the factors contributing to the suceptibility or resistance of cowpea plants to the bugs and hence Suggest a breeding strategy for its improvement
