Strategic response by Kenya Power and Lighting Company Ltd to challenges of enterprise resource planning system
Abstract
The study seeks to determine the strategic response by Kplc to address challenges of ERP system. ERP system is standard software solution designed to provide a single information system for organization wide coordination and integration of key business processes. ERP systems have revolutionized the way organization operate their business by providing online, real time information, integration of company business and operation efficiency. A number organization private and public have implemented ERP system in order to enhance its competitive position ad improve quality of service
The research design was a case study. The objectives of the study was to determine the strategic approach used by Kplc in addressing the challenges The data was collected using an open ended questionnaire. Data was analyzed using content analysis. Results of the study identified culture, organization structure, business processes and communication issues as the major challenges encountered during the ERP implementation. The strategic responses adopted by Kplc to ensure successful implementation included, hiring of the external change agent, participation and involvement of members of the organization, training leadership style and rewards and recognition mechanism.
In conclusion although ERP implementation was finally rolled out and became operational respondent sighted some gaps in execution of the plan that included lack of skill on the part of managers to manage change. Due to the frequent changes taking place in the business environment it was recommended that study be done to determine the best way to respond ERP implementation.
