dc.description.abstractPerformance management applies to organizations with recurrent activities that establish organizational goals, monitor progress towards the goals, and make adjustment to achieve those goals more effectively and efficiently. Performance management practices ensure that successful organizations realize performance management as a critical business tool, particularly in translating a strategy into results and remaining competitive. Performance management has assumed a pivotal role in the face of rapid changes such as globalization, liberalization, technological and market changes. It is the backbone of human resource management for any organization intending to produce a high performance and leverage its human capital. Performance management efforts in organizations should be distinctly integrated and every sphere of human resource activity must be integrated vertically and horizontally to deliver significant business results. The study is aimed at investigating how the insurance companies in Kenya have adopted the performance management practices. The practices are more business and strategic oriented and include: rigorous training and development, compensation, performance management processes, performance appraisal and career development. The specific objective of the study will be to determine the performance management practices adopted by the insurance firms in Kenya. A descriptive survey design will be used and data gathered from the respondents using questionnaires. The respondents will be heads of Human Resource function of these firms. The presentation of analysis of the data will be done using descriptive statistics which will be in forms of tables and bar charts.en_US
