| dc.description.abstract | Community Based Organizations come under the purview of Non-governmental organizations and provide a variety of activities within the community including education, health, capacity building, and agriculture. Others are rehabilitation of disabled, food security and research. Although the activities of the foreign NGOs in the the country have received extensive recognition, the contributions of local CBOs in socio-economic development have gone largely unnoticed. There are mixed reactions as to the exact impact of CBO activities in Kenya and in. Whereas it is argued that currently, the sector drives approximately Ksh. 130 billion towards development activities in Kenya, other quarters contend that despite the long existance of these organizations, many areas have been recording high poverty levels. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Influence of Community Based Organization activities on Community Development in Nakuru Municipality. The study will adopt the descriptive survey research design with a cross-sectional approach. The target populations for the study will include 68,468 households and project officers of the 48 CBOs in the district.Through stratified sampling methods, the study will sample 300 households proportionately from the 10 administrative sub-locations that comprise the district depending on the number of households in each of these administrative units. The study will also purposively sample 20 project officers from the CBOs to participate in the study. The data collection instruments for the study will be questionnaires with both closed and open-ended items. Peers, the supervisor and research experts will be used to ascertain validity of the questionnaire items. The reliability of the items will be tested after a pilot test involving 20 households which will not be part of the actual sample, using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. In order to qualify for data collection, the questionnaires’ internal consistency will have to be equal to or higher than α=0.70 to meet the threshold of acceptable reliability. Data collected will be processed, organized and analyzed with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer programme. Quantitative analysis will be done using descriptive statistics and the findings presented in frequencies and percentages. Inferential statistics (Pearson’s chi-square) will be used to establish the relationships between independent and dependent variables. The findings of the study are expected to inform the stakeholders in community development especially the government, communities and civil societies on the influence and role of Community Based Organization Programs on Community Development. The findings shall be invaluable in pinpointing possible areas in need of improvement in as far as the draft bill intented to provide regulatory mechanisms in the operations of CBOs before finalization. | en |
