Modern organizations are constantly interacting with competitive and turbulent
marketplaces presenting new threats and opportunities. This calls upon the organizations
to engage in strategic management practices in order to survive and achieve their
corporate goals within these marketplaces. This study was designed to establish the
extent at which strategic management practices are adopted by BMUs in Bondo Sub
County. To achieve this objective, the study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional survey
design, targeting all the 42 BMUs. 28 questionnaires were received which were
considered adequate for analysis. The study established that more than 30% of the studied
organizations adopted most of the strategic management practices. These organizations
had vision, mission statements and core values which were mainly implied. To larger
extent situation analysis, setting of financial objectives, crafting and implementation of
strategies and continuous evaluation and control were adopted. The findings largely
confirm the theoretical underpinnings and past empirical studies of strategic
management. The study advances adoption of the strategic management practices by
small organizations to remain both efficient and effective. In future research should be
conducted on factors influencing and challenges of strategy implementation with
respective to community owned organizations like BMUs.
