Employee performance management practices among major supermarkets in Kisumu municipality-Kenya

Managing employee performance in organizations has been traditionally centred on assessing performance and allocating reward, with effective performance being seen as the result of the interaction between individual ability and motivation. However it is increasingly being realized that planning and enabling performance have a critical effect on individual performance, with performance goals and standards, appropriate resources, guidance and support from the individual's manager all being central. Successful organizations have come to appreciate performance management practices as a critical business tool in translating a strategy into results thus remaining competitive.
The objective of this study was to establish employee performance management practices adopted by supermarkets in Kisumu Municipality. A descriptive survey design was used, data was gathered from the respondents using semi-structured questionnaires. Respondents were heads of Human Resource Management functions of these firms. Data was Analyzed using descriptive statistics. Tables, charts and graphs were used for data representation. From the findings it is clear that Supermarkets in Kisumu Municipality are at the infant stage of embracing employee performance management practices, they have not fully implemented all the practices neither did they intergrate them with their goals and objectives.
Their reward system is not participative at all, it is therefore important that Supermarkets in Kisumu municipality allow and implement participative performance management practices at all levels to realize sustained competitive advantage. The study recommends that further research be done on employee performance management practices adopted by large supermarkets in the whole country. This will ensure use of a large sample from which conclusive findings could be made and hence improve adoption of employee performance practices by supermarkets and other institutions.
