Management of Human-wildlife Conflict in Kenya: a Case Study of Kajiado County, 1995-2012
Abstract
Human-wildlife conflict which is a global challenge has been an issue of great concern to the
Government due to the frequent incidences of the conflict Kajiado County. This study set out to
establish the magnitude of the conflict in the County and also find out whether the local
community is involved by government and its agencies in decision-making and management of
this natural resource. The study was based on two hypotheses that is, the assumption that there is
a positive association between involvement of local communities in wildlife management and
reduction of human-wildlife conflicts and that enhanced financial compensation for wildlife related
attacks on people will have a positive impact on resolving human-wildlife conflicts. The
study was done using questionnaires which were administered on members of the local
community and on government officials including elected representatives. Most of the questions
were structured but a few of them were open-ended in a bid to elicit views and opinions from the
respondents. The study established that human-wildlife conflicts are a major issue in the County
in form of deaths, injuries and destruction of people's property notably; livestock, crops and
infrastructures. The study concluded that there is need for government agencies and the
conservationists to work closely with local communities and other stakeholders in the search for
appropriate and sustainable strategies for resolving human-wildlife conflicts not only in Kajiado
County but in the whole country. The study recommends that concerted efforts be made by the
government and the conservationists to involve all stakeholders in decision making and
management of wildlife. The study further recommends that local communities and other
stakeholders in Kajiado County be sensitized in a structured manner on the critical importance of
wildlife in our country's socio-economic development.
