| dc.description.abstract | Eighteen students from the University of Nairobi have been awarded the Chinese Ambassador’s Scholarships for the year 2013.
The award ceremony held today at the University not only saw the Chinese Ambassador, Liu Guangyuan and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George Magoha, present the scholarships but also sign a memorandum of understanding that will see the Embassy establish an annual scholarship scheme at the University.
While thanking the Chinese Embassy for availing the scholarship funds towards the scheme, Prof. Magoha noted that the office of the Special Students Advisor, Prof. Godfrey Muriuki, had taken the scholarship applicants through a rigorous vetting process to ensure that they meet the set qualifications. The students must have excellent academic records and be individuals of impeccable character. They must come from a needy family background and cannot sustain their studies without a helping hand.
In his remarks, Ambassador Guangyuan congratulated the scholarship recipients and charged them to maintain their academic performance. He said that the youth are the future of Kenya and that their dreams and aspirations should not be left to die despite the different challenges faced. The Embassy has committed to donating an annual scholarship kitty of Kshs. 1.5 to 2 million that will see each beneficiary get at least Kshs.100,000.
Speaking on behalf of the scholarship recipients, Josephat Kaibiru, thanked the Chinese Embassy and the University Management for the support accorded to them. He shared that university life can be frustrating for needy students which affects their performance. | en_US |
