dc.description.abstracthe ceremony which was held at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Services (CAVS) Veterinary Farm- Kanyariri was done in partnership with Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA). The organization provided the 3000 tree seedlings to be planted, labour to dig the planting holes and to support the post planting care. Senior staff members from CAVS led guests, UoN and KTDA staff members in planting trees. Students’ organizations such as Runway Environmentalist, Upper Kabete Environmental Forum and Kabete Campus Student Organization represented the students. In attendance was Hon. Rachel Chebesh representing Kenya Women Parliamentarian Association. The chief guest of honour was Mr. Lerionka Tiampati, Group Chief Executive Officer, KTDA. In his remarks, Mr. Tiampati commended the University for its efforts in conserving the environment through planting trees. It is important for Kenyans to contribute in different small ways and reverse the damage already done to the environment. Prunnus africana (also known as Glacilior), PodoCarpus and Meru Oak are the tree species planted. The event follows the University’s Annual Tree Planting Ceremony that saw about 15,000 trees planted. World Environment Day is commemorated every year on 5th June. World Environment Day celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become the one of the main vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action. Through World Environment Day, the UN Environment Programme is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitableen_US
