This will be a brief paper. In the first part we give an outline of Marakwet society as a background to a discussion of social change and development in the area, which we would like to introduce at the seminar on May 10th. In the second part we present a theoretical problem that we hope can be investigated with material from fieldwork in Marakwet Division. The paper, then, is merely a research proposal presented to invite criticism and suggestions.
