dc.description.abstractThis study sought to inquire into the operational characteristics of matatu mode of public transport in the process of providing public transport in Nairobi. The study was carried out during 1988 - 1989 academic year at the University of Nairobi. The findings were that matatu mode of transport has proved its viability to participate effectively in the public transport sector of Nairobi. The study shows that overloading, chaotic parking And accidents in matatu services are by and is a clear manifestation of the current urban development taking place in Nairobi. The Matatu Operators were however found guilty of the prevailing high rate of indiscipline in the the services. The study also found that the established potential viability of matatu services is a factor 10hich if effectively planned and cordinated with other public transport modes, can go along way in solving the present and future public transport service problems in Nairobi. The factors which seem to justify their viability included; their complementary role in providing commuter services, their ability to generate direct or indirect employment opportunities, the expected future growth of Nairobi and their unique operational characteristic which enables them to be operated at higher frequencies than the formal Urban Buses.en_US
