The study involves planning the pedestrian mode of traveI between Kibera residential zone and Industrial area in It looks at the operational characteristics of the pedestrians between the area with a view of coming up with proposals to enhancing their movement. Paradoxically, the conventional PubIic Service Vehicles (PSVs) -- the kBS and NBS, and Matatus - in Nairobi are geared in their routing system towards the low income areas which are also the major generators off pedestrians! The latter are however not catered for in terms of provision of facilities and other logistical support. Their number is however increasing. In order to come up with policy recommendations. the study reviews existing literature on pedestrian travel. The literature revealed that studies on walking fall into two broad groups: (a) Studies aimed at understanding walking characteristics as an access mode to the other local systems and urban land uses and (b) Studies related to facility design. This study adopted the former methodology. facility design. This study adopted the In chapter three, the study gives a historical] background of their journey origin and destination i.e. Kibera and Industrial areas, respectively. In the analysis. the movement characteristics of the pedestrians is given and uses four major viewpoints in t.his respect: (a) the trip origin (Kibera), (b) the trip destination (Industrial Area) (c) the pedestrian and (d) the interrelationship between origin and destination by the pedestrian trip. A synthesis of information from these viewpoints leds to the establishment of the pedestrian travel pattern in chapter five. The study looks at those attributes of the pedestrians which aid in understanding the size, distance, social-economic characteristics, directional and time patterns of the routes of movement of the pedestrian. This data is important since a knowledge of the current and future pedestrian movements will enable possible pedestrian facilities and other logical data to be evaluated. This data tell us who is likely to travel by foot in urban areas and by what mode and to where the trip made. It was established that the Pedestrian mode of travel has a unique role in urban transportation system in Nairobi. The choice to walk in this study is as a result of a composite of issues namely socio-economic and behaviourial characteristics. The provision of facilities in this study plays a very insignificant role in influencing the choice to walk. This does however not imply that they should not be provided. Rather the provision of pedestrian facilities should start by a recognition of the pedestrian mode of travel so that these facilities should be provided as an integral part of the entire transport system. This is because all the different modes of travel form a complementary system.en_US
