The action of sheep prolactin on human renal function was investigated in conscious, adult, male volunteers. The prolactin was given by intramuscular injection, and the dose used was within the physiological range for prolactinlike activity. The hormone reduced renal excretion of water, sodium, and potassium, and increased plasma sodium and osmolality. It caused subjective sensations of thirst and malaise. The action seemed to persist for 12-18 hours.
