Miniature radio transmitters were used to monitor deep muscle, subcutaneous, skin surface, and hair stlrface temperatures in three species of unrestrained African ungulates. Deep muscle and suboutaneous transmitters were implanted through an incision in the shoulder region. Skin and hair surface transmitters were attached with silastic. Signal booster units attached to a small saddle worn by the animals provided a transmission range of about 200m.en_US
