Labour turnover in the insurance companies in Kenya

Abstract

Any business or enterprise requires human effort in form of labour to realise its goals. The labour required must be in the right quantity and quality for the enterprises to excel. Any unplanned departures by employees not only affect the organisational capacity to deliver but also have costly consequences. For organisations offering products or services which are similar, the quality of labour and its sustainability becomes a source of competitive advantage. It was with this in mind that the study was carried aimed at gaining insights and understanding factors responsible for labour turnover in the Insurance companies in Kenya. The overall objectives were: (i) Establish the extent of the labour turnover in the insurance Companies in Kenya. (ii) Establish factors responsible for the labour turnover in the insurance companies in Kenya The research design adopted in this study was descriptive census survey since the population was small. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the questionnaire was sent to 43 insurance companies licensed to transact insurance business in Kenya. The response was 59% of the population. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data in which case, the measures of central tendency, percentages, frequencies and tables were used. The data was coded to facilitate computer data input and then analysed using SPSS. This entailed using proportions, percentages, means and frequency distributions. The study brought out the common issues related to labour turnover across all the insurance companies.
