dc.description.abstractThis study analyzed the extent of Short Message Services banking adoption, major factors responsible for and barriers to SMS banking technology adoption. Short Message Services is a technology enabling service from banks to its customer’s permitting them to operate selected banking services over their mobile phones using SMS. SMS Banking services can be operated as both Push Messages sent to their Customers and Pull messages, which customers initiate from the bank. Many banks would have some concerns when initiating the prospects of introducing SMS. Many banks would have some concerns when the prospects of introducing SMS Banking are discussed. Most of these concerns revolve around security controls around SMS Banking. The objective of the study was to determine the extent to which Commercial banks in Kenya apply SMS banking and investigate the challenges experienced in the use of SMS banking by commercial banks. Studies that have been done on banking in Kenya have not concentrated on SMS banking in Kenya. Otieno (2006) investigated the internet banking technology adoption among commercial banks in Kenya. There is no study so far that has investigated the adoption of SMS banking in Kenya. This study therefore intends to fill this knowledge gap. The study focuses on all the 43 commercial banks. The banking sector was selected largely because it has always taken a lead role in implementing strategic issues management practices and is reported to spend huge amounts on the same. The respondents were IT Managers and one operational staff in the selected commercial banks. The questionnaires were used to collect information from the information technology department and other employees concerned with information technology adoption and implementation, in case the bank had adopted the SMS banking.
