dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to find out the impact of Emergency School Feeding Programme in Somaliland primary schools with specific focus on girls education. The study was guided by the following specific objectives of the study: to find out the extent to which ESFP (Emergency School Feeding Programme) contributes to the improvement on enrolment and retention of the students in Somaliland primary schools with specific focus on girls, to find out the difference in terms of enrolment and retention of girls between ESFP assisted schools versus non-assisted schools, to establish the impact of school feeding program of the performance of girls in primary schools in Gebiley District in Somaliland and to determine the impact of school feeding program on the school attendance rate of Girls in primary schools in Gebiley District in Somaliland. The study was carried out in primary schools in Gabiley District in Somaliland. Descriptive survey design was used for the study. The study targeted the head teachers, class teachers and parents. The District had 38 public primary schools. A total of 10 schools were sampled for the study. Purposive sampling was used to select the head teachers, class teachers and parents/caretakers. A total of 170 respondents were sampled for the study (i.e from every school, the researcher sampled the head teacher, 8 teachers and 8 parents) out of which 160 participated (including 78 teachers and 82 parent) giving a response rate of 94 percent. Questionnaires and interview schedules was used as instruments for data collection. The researcher used questionnaires to collect primary data from the head teachers and class teachers while interview schedules were used to collect data from parents. Quantitative data collected was analyzed, presented and interpreted using both descriptive statistics while content analysis techniques was used to analyze qualitative data. collected using interview schedules. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) package was used to analyze the quantitative data. Descriptive statistics such as means, standard deviation, frequencies and percentages was used to describe the data. The analyzed data was presented in form of tables, pie-charts and bar-graphs where applicable. The study found that that 87 percent of the respondents strongly agreed that Emergency school feeding programs in school has led to the increase in the enrolment of children in schools. In comparing the enrolment rate of pupils in ESFP assisted and non-assisted, the study found that out of the 10 schools studied, those who did not receive the assistance from the ESFP had lower population of pupils compared to those who received the assistance. Regarding the retention of pupils in schools, the study found that the dropout rate of girls in ESFP non supported schools were higher than those in ESFP supported schools. This was shown by the fact that the average dropout rate for the non-supported schools was 3 percent compared to the dropout rate of ESFP supported schools standing at zero percent. Regarding the effect of ESFP on the performance of pupils, the study found out that 97 percent of the respondents indicated that ESFP had effect on the performance of pupils in Primary schools in Gebiley District. The study finally found that that 97 percent of the respondents indicated that ESFP improve schools attendance among girls. The study concluded that ESFP improved the enrolment and retention, performance and attendance of girls in Primary schools in Gebiley. It was recommended that the programme be encouraged and introduced in non-supported schools to enhance enrollment and retention. The study finally recommended that another study be done to evaluate the challenges facing the supply of ESFP in schools in other districts which was not the focus of this study.en_US
