| dc.description.abstract | Prof Winnie Mitullah was one of the moderators at the University of Nairobi’s symposium on “Counterterrorism: In search of a Grand African Strategy.” The symposium was organised by the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies (IDIS) and Africa Policy Institute (API) on May 7th 2015 at the University of Nairobi, main campus.Prof Mitullah moderated an academic panel on “Pillars of Africa’s Grand Counterterrorism Strategy: Mechanisms, Actors and Identities in Counterterrorism Action in Africa. Another topic discussed at the forum was “Issues, Concepts and Mechanisms, on Counterterrorism in Africa.” The keynote address was delivered by Dr Monica Juma, the Cabinet Secretary nominee. Other speakers were University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi and College of Humanities and Social Sciences Principal Prof Enos Njeru. Defence Cabinet Secretary Rachel Omamo and Attorney General Prof Githu Muigai were panelists at the symposium.The event was attended by participants from all sectors involved in counter-terrorism, including senior government officials; members of the diplomatic Corps, African regional organizations; UN and other international agencies, scholars, civil society, think-tanks and the media.The participants identifed and critically examined the existing strategies for combating terrorism; their efficacy and areas that require improvement; as well as the governance environments that may influence the terrorist trends in Africa. | en_US |
