T Biodentine is a novel tricalcium silicate based material with excellent properties suited for use in multiple dental procedures. However, there is still room for improvement of this cement, hence this study being conducted to investigate the impact of bioactive glass (bioglass) addition to Biodentine. Objective: To compare the apatite formation, fluoride ion release, radiopacity, compressive strength and setting time of Biodentine cements modified by three different compositions of bioglasses Method: High fluoride, high strontium and high fluoride + strontium containing bioglasses were synthesized and individually added to original Biodentine powder and 3 cements, BQ, BI and BH respectively, prepared. The fourth unmodified cement was BO. Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) characterization, ion release studies, compressive strength, radiopacity and setting time tests were conducted according to ISO guidelines. Result: Arbitrary ranking of the results from this study is tabulated below; where 1 is best and 4 is worst. Cement Modification Apatite formation Fluoride ion release Radiopacity Strength Setting time Unmodified - BO 3 - 2 4 1 Fluoride bioglass - BQ 1 - 4 3 3 Strontium bioglass - BI 4 2 3 2 2 Fluoride- Strontium bioglass - BH 2 1 1 1 4 Conclusion: Bioglass addition was shown to favourably modify a new tricalcium silicate based cenment. Fluoride-substituted apatite formation and fluorine ion release was confirmed on addition of fluoride containing bioglass. Higher radiopacity and compressive strength were recorded with the high fluoride + strontium bioglass modification which unfortunately, lengthened the setting time.
