| dc.description.abstract | This study presents the results of a comparative analysis of translated metaphors in Kiswahili -into- English drama texts. Specifically, the study presents a comparative analysis of semantic/pragmatic mismatches that have been observed to have occurred in the process of translating metaphors and metaphorical expressions in the course of translating Kiswahili drama texts as the source text (ST) into English as the target text (TT). The drama texts from which the data in our corpus is derived from are: Kifo Kisimani (English-Death at the Well) and Natala (English-Natala).
The study has followed the framework of lexical -pragmatics in Relevance Theory with the main objective being to highlight and analyze semantic-pragmatic mismatches that occurs in the process of translating and transferring meanings in metaphors and metaphorical expressions and show how context can be used optimally as one suggested way of resolving these mismatches.
The study is organized into five chapters. Chapter one focuses on introduction. The issues discussed here include: background to the study, statement of the problem, objectives, hypotheses, rationale, scope and limitation, theoretical framework, literature review, methodology and significance of the study and a conclusion has been made.
Chapter two focuses on the concept of metaphor as well as terms related to our study. Specifically ,the study looks into the meaning of: a literary text ,figurative language, semantics and pragmatics as well as implicatures .In metaphor ,we have looked into its various aspects which includes: the concept itself, the structure, how to analyse, strategies of translating it, the role of a translator in the course of its translation, the role of context ,how to translate it and the types. A conclusion has been made. Chapter three Tests the theory.
The process of exical-pragmatics in Reverence Theory where tenets of Blutner (1990) and Wilson (in Wilson & Sperber 2004, Sperber and Wilson 1986/1995, and Carston 2002) have been used to analyze various mismatches depending on their point of occurrence to find out if the theory has been able to adequately analyze the semantic/pragmatic mismatches noted. A table has been used to show the frequencies and a graphic representation of the same has been made. A summary has been made.
Chapter four deals with the major causes of the observed mismatches and context as a suggested method of mismatch resolution coupled with the author's knowledge has been suggested and a summary made. Chapter five concludes our research. Remarks of the research findings ,objectives and hypotheses testing has been made, conclusions drawn and recommendations for further studies on translation mismatches have been made, particularly in regard to translating Kiswahili drama literary texts into English. | en_US |
